Universal’s Bold Moves Ahead
As Universal Orlando Resort prepares for the monumental launch of its highly anticipated Epic Universe park in 2025, exciting changes are in the works. However, not all updates involve new attractions—some include saying farewell to fan favorites. Recent permits filed by Universal suggest the iconic Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit roller coaster might be on its final track. Let’s dive into what this could mean for the park’s future.
The Permit That Says It All
On December 23, 2024, Universal filed plans with the South Florida Water Management District, outlining a project to “remove [an] existing attraction and replace [it] with [a] proposed attraction.” The filing detailed structural modifications, landscaping changes, and even the construction of three new buildings around the ride’s footprint. While Universal hasn’t officially confirmed anything, this type of documentation strongly hints at big changes ahead for the beloved (albeit polarizing) coaster.
Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit’s Legacy
Opening in August 2009, Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit has been a standout feature of Universal Studios Florida’s skyline, thanks to its towering 167-foot vertical lift and unique audio experience. Riders could select custom soundtracks, from rock classics to pop hits, making every ride a personal jam session. Despite its innovative design, the ride hasn’t always aged gracefully. Many fans have noted its rough ride experience and shrinking music playlist in recent years.
Still, the coaster holds a special place in the hearts of visitors who braved its heart-pounding 90-degree climb and adrenaline-pumping non-inverted loop.
What’s Next for the Rockit Site?
The permit documents mention three new structures to be added, two of which would occupy areas currently used for the queue and backstage spaces. Speculation is swirling about what might replace Rip Ride Rockit. Some theories include:
- A Fast & Furious-themed coaster: Universal’s Hollywood location is already building a “Hollywood Drift” coaster featuring innovative spinning vehicles. Could Orlando follow suit?
- A Ghostbusters attraction: With the new buildings encroaching on the area near the firehouse façade (a nod to the Ghostbusters), some wonder if a supernatural-themed ride could materialize.
- A Wicked-themed experience: As Universal adapts its film franchises into attractions, a gravity-defying roller coaster inspired by Wicked could be a showstopper.
The replacement will likely need to be a crowd-puller, especially with Epic Universe drawing attention when it opens in 2025.
A Bittersweet Goodbye
Theme park fans often have mixed feelings about ride closures. While Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit has its critics, it’s also been a significant part of Universal’s roller coaster lineup for over 15 years. If you’re a fan, now might be the time to take one last ride before the demolition crews move in.
Universal’s track record suggests whatever replaces Rip Ride Rockit will be a groundbreaking addition. Whether it’s a high-speed thrill ride or a family-friendly experience, the future of Universal Studios Florida looks as bright as ever.
